I note some things in this scene described as heavenly worship.

This is in heaven. It is not heaven on earth. This is the highest heaven- unadulterated worship of God.

The first remarkable thing is an open door. John saw an open door. I take it that heaven is open to all who sincerely want to enter the presence of God. Granted, John was in the spirit and he was invited, “Come up here and I will show you…”

I said that he was in the spirit for I read that at the beginning of the book. Now I read again, “at once I was in the spirit”. Getting directly into God’s presence has got to be the most transformative of experiences.

What does John see? What do I see as I read?

The beauty of precious stones – mention of jasper, carnelian, emeralds, and golden crowns. Crowning this is the rainbow which brings colour into a wet dry or dry wet situation. A sea of glass, like crystal. Wow!

Check out the visual effects. Lightning- lots of light! See through glass and plenty of eyes. Each of the four living creatures had plenty of eyes. Nothing could be hidden there. One must see it all in the clear light that abounds. There is no room for pretence. Hypocrisy’s out the door.

What is heard? Noise! Trumpet sounds. The one who spoke was sounding like a trumpet! More sounds- rumblings, and peals of thunder. I once heard a Pentecostal pastor say that worship was full of noise and I didn’t feel like buying his brand.

And lots of song! And repetition too! “Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God the Almighty, who was and is and is to come.” “Day and night without ceasing,“ we read.

And there is motion- lots of movement- the twenty-four elders bowing and falling before the throne. Nothing is static here. Indeed, it’s ecstatic! Their golden crowns are taken off and cast before the throne as they sing.

Worship takes all the focus and concentration and energy of those engaged in it; and there is one subject o receive this worship. All the focus is on God.

What if we worshipped God on earth as it is done in heaven? With our whole being? I know the picture is one of heaven, not heaven on earth, but it tells me to guard against measly, impoverished worship. I know there have been times when I was so absorbed with the Lord’s presence that I could do nothing but be still; but I also know that there are times when worship comes alive with sights and sounds indescribable!

Do not think that you’re crazy when your heart tells you to shout your praise! Do not think you’re an idiot when your hands tell you to do God’s praise. Do not be inhibited when your body says, Let’s praise! Total Praise!

For our Lord and God is worthy of all praise.

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.
