When your benefits outweigh your benefactor’s, you might just be in trouble!
Some people are genuinely interested in others and want to help them, but most persons have trouble when their beneficiaries end up outdoing the “benefactors”, especially when that happens in the same area or field where help was needed in the first place.
Being gracious enough to rejoice with your protégé who has gone much further than you have requires the mind of Christ. Indeed, it reflects the spirit of Jesus who did not find condescension from his place as God, too much to give for the sake of human beings.
Laban had agreed to Jacob’s proposition that he (Jacob) get the striped and spotted animals from the herd. But that savvy mind that resided in Jacob did not propose something other than one to benefit Jacob the most.
Laban’s sons were angry and said, “Jacob has taken all that was our father’s; he has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.” Laban ‘s attitude towards his nephew also changed.
Jacob told his wives, Laban’s daughters that it was God’s blessing.
6 You know that I have served your father with all my strength; 7 yet your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not permit him to harm me. 8 If he said, ‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flock bore speckled; and if he said, ‘The striped shall be your wages,’ then all the flock bore striped. 9 Thus God has taken away the livestock of your father, and given them to me.
Jacob said that he had a dream during the mating of the flock. Another dream? Had he observed something while working but got to process it when not overpowered by work, when resting with and in the Lord? I have discovered that sometimes we are plain too busy to see what God is showing us; but when we slow down, we let God’s Spirit make sense of what we would not see previously, so that later we are well enlightened. Whatever the case, Jacob was sure that God had given him a formula for success; and he used it.
It was a winning formula and Laban did not like that. It was time to move on with all his wives, their children and all his acquired property – time to go back home..
